Mackonner Dy Pickleball Gold Win: Mackonner Dy, 15, a teen from Richmond, won gold at the 2025 Myoflex National Championship held in Manitoba from August 19 to 24. Dy claimed gold in the men’s singles double elimination (age 49 and under) and bronze in the men’s doubles round robin (age 19 and above), competing as part of Team BC.
Strong Performance in Singles and Doubles
In the singles double elimination finals, Dy faced Vancouver’s Armaan Jiwa Mawji. Dy lost 14-6 and 15-1 but returned to win 21-16 in the final match. “I played a solid game. He played well. Getting a few good shots in by me was the turning point for the final game,” Dy said. Team BC also won gold in the provincial team competition.
Early Pickleball Journey and Training
Dy first became interested in pickleball after seeing the new courts at South Arm Community Centre in 2020. He said, “My parents, both my mom and dad, play it too. So it’s also a good way just to spend time together.” Dy started competing three years ago and began training more seriously last year. Being homeschooled allows him to balance studies and daily practice in summer, reducing to four sessions a week during the school year.
Challenges with Courts and Weather
Dy noted that Vancouver’s rainy weather and limited courts make training difficult. “For the past three years, we’ve had one facility in Richmond that offered professional-grade indoor courts, and they were booked all the time,” he said. He sometimes travels to Surrey for better practice opportunities and plans to compete in more U.S. tournaments to gain experience against higher-level players.
Future Goals
While uncertain about pursuing professional pickleball full-time, Dy said, “I’m currently in Grade 10, so if I can turn pro before graduating, that’d be great, but I would still like to pursue an education. It definitely would be cool to become pro and just experience what it’s like to be a pro athlete at the high level.”
