Canada Proud Pickleball Tournament Unites White Rock in Spirited Play and Charity

Canada Proud Pickleball Tournament White Rock: The White Rock Pickleball Association held its ‘Canada Proud’ tournament over the weekend, celebrating the sport with a national theme. Members wore red-and-white outfits, with Debbie Lawrance and Peter Hucul winning the best-dressed awards. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Growing Community and Volunteer Support

John Bogar, one of the event organizers, praised the volunteers. “We are fortunate to have an incredible group of volunteers. We had people out on Saturday morning cleaning the courts at 7 a.m., setting up tents with courtesy refreshments, manning the registration desk, singing the national anthem, providing first aid support, fundraising and also refereeing,” he said.

Bogar added, “We truly have an amazing community based on camaraderie and community pride!” The association has grown to nearly 650 members, reflecting the popularity of pickleball in the area.

Competitive Matches and Youth Participation

Although intended as a fun tournament, the matches were competitive. Bogar noted the final matches were particularly exciting and highlighted that pickleball has become an inter-generational sport. “All spectators were impressed with the high skill levels as they watched the thrilling final matches — all consisting of ‘younger’ teams,” he said, pointing out that many schools now include pickleball in their curriculum.

In the Saturday mixed doubles competition, Edmund Luk and Andrea Lee emerged as the A-side champions. However, Sunday’s men’s and women’s competitions were canceled due to rain.

Community Impact and Legacy

The tournament not only provided entertainment but also supported a charitable cause, with proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation. Events like this help strengthen community ties, promote health and fitness, and encourage young players to participate in pickleball.
