Pickleball Power Play: Community Rallies to Secure Funding for Safer Snowdon Park Courts

Snowdon Park Pickleball Court Funding: A large group of pickleball players attended last night’s city council meeting to support funding for resurfacing local courts. The focus was on Snowdon Park on Shannon Road. Councillors unanimously approved the resolution, recognizing both the sport’s growth and the need for safe municipal facilities.

Community Shows Strong Support

Roughly half of the packed gallery were pickleball players. Terry Bryson, who organized the turnout, estimated about 40 citizens participated, many waiting two hours for their agenda item. Bryson said,

“It shows they recognize both the growth of pickleball and the importance of maintaining safe municipal facilities. Investing in Shannon Road is not about building something new, it’s about repairing what we already have and making it safe for everyone.”

Councillors Praise Engagement

Ward 1 Councillor Sandra Hollingsworth, who introduced the resolution, thanked the crowd:

“Thank you very much everyone in the gallery for coming tonight… This is what it’s all about. You working with council, me being your voice. So thank you for coming today.”

Ward 1 Councillor Sonny Spina emphasized fairness:

“In no way do I feel like we’re asking for anyone to jump any particular park… other parks and other projects in the city will be serviced as well, in time.”

Ward 4 Councillor Marchy Bruni noted personal connections to players:

“I look in the audience and there are people that I recognize, people that have smashed the ball to me, purposely.”

He also suggested funding for indoor courts usable year-round. Ward 2 Councillor Luke Dufour highlighted the need for additional courts:

“More than one new court is needed to meet the growing demand for local pickleball courts, particularly in the East End.”

Significance for the Community

The council’s unanimous approval marks a win for both recreational players and the city’s park infrastructure. The decision reflects the sport’s growing popularity and the importance of keeping municipal courts safe, accessible, and well-maintained for all residents.
