Tournaments Draw Diverse Participation

In the past seven months, East India Pickleball organized several tournaments, including a PWR event with a prize pool of ₹3,00,000. These events have attracted a wide demographic, from children to seniors.

“In our latest PWR tournament, participants ranged from kids to people over 55. The gold medalist was 62 years old,”. He added that the sport’s appeal spans various age groups, with both youth and seniors taking part enthusiastically.(Jupiter Dalai)

Despite its growth, the sport faces challenges.

“The biggest challenge is creating broader awareness and attracting sponsors,” (Jupiter Dalai).

Local Support Boosts Pickleball’s Reach

The local government has promoted pickleball by inaugurating the first public pickleball court in Ward 87 on Southern Avenue. This court, funded by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, is free for residents and encourages participation.

“We installed a court in Ward 87 to allow residents to enjoy pickleball. More initiatives like this can significantly develop the sport,” (Jupiter Dalai).

Looking ahead, Dalai aims to expand pickleball access by setting up larger courts in North and South Kolkata and surrounding areas.

“We want to make pickleball attractive and accessible to schoolchildren and senior citizens,” (Jupiter Dalai).

With continued efforts, Kolkata’s pickleball scene is set to grow further, solidifying its place as one of the fastest-growing sports in the region.
