Tennis Prodigy Joins Chennai Super Champs: Tyra Calderwood, a former tennis prodigy, has joined the Chennai Super Champs to compete in the inaugural World Pickleball League (WPBL) in Mumbai. Known for her unique sports journey, Calderwood is transitioning from Grand Slam tennis to professional pickleball, where she aims to make an impact.

The 34-year-old Australian first made her mark as the youngest player to compete in the Australian Open Junior event at age 13.

She went on to play in all four Grand Slam junior tournaments and later achieved a WTA doubles ranking. After retiring from tennis and focusing on coaching in Sydney, Calderwood rediscovered her competitive spirit through pickleball in early 2024.

Rising Star in Pickleball

Calderwood’s tennis skills quickly translated into pickleball success. In Australia’s National Pickleball League (NPL), she was the first draft pick before even competing professionally.

Leading her team, the Aliens, she reached the finals in her debut season. Her leadership qualities earned her a second season as captain, with her team making the finals again.

Sharing her perspective, Calderwood said, “I believe I am a great player to have on someone’s team. I adapt well to others and always give my best in everything I do.”

New Chapter with Chennai Super Champs

The Chennai Super Champs, co-owned by actress-entrepreneur Samantha Ruth Prabhu, have signed Calderwood to strengthen their roster for the WPBL. The league begins on January 24, with six teams competing in a round-robin format. Matches will take place at the Cricket Club of India (Brabourne Stadium) in Mumbai, with semi-finals on February 1 and the final on February 2.

Competing in India excites Calderwood, as she sees it as an opportunity to grow the sport globally. Her addition brings experience and versatility to the Super Champs, enhancing their chances in the league.
