Indian Pickleball Scores Big: Gains National Sports Status, Eyes Olympic Dream

Indian Pickleball Association’s Recognition: The Indian Pickleball Association (IPA) has been officially recognized as a National Sports Federation (NSF) by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The decision, made on April 25, aims to promote and grow the sport across India.

The Ministry’s letter stated, “On Indian Pickleball Association’s request, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports agrees to recognize the IPA as a National Sports Federation.” This recognition will place the IPA under a two-year observation period to ensure it follows the National Sports Code. However, it will not be eligible for government funding during this time.

Support Behind the Move

The All India Pickleball Association (AIPA), the governing body behind IPA, submitted the required documents to the ministry in November 2024. The request came after India hosted its first World Pickleball Championship in Mumbai, a major international event held in November last year.

650 players participated in the championship. Athletes came from 16 countries, including Australia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Poland, and Singapore, showing global interest in the sport.

Growth of Pickleball in India

Pickleball, a paddle sport that mixes tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, is growing fast in India. The AIPA has led the charge by organizing events and running development programs at the grassroots level. AIPA’s president, Arvind Prabhoo, is optimistic about the sport’s future, even aiming for its inclusion in the Olympic Games.

What It Means for the Sport

The Ministry’s recognition of IPA as an NSF is expected to boost pickleball’s popularity in India. While the IPA must meet certain rules and will not receive funding right away, this step opens the door to wider support, more events, and future international success.

News in Brief: Indian Pickleball Association’s Recognition

The Sports Ministry has named the Indian Pickleball Association a National Sports Federation. This move follows India’s successful hosting of the 2024 World Pickleball Championship. While IPA won’t receive funding for two years, the decision is a major step for the sport’s growth and Olympic hopes in India.
