Sports Facilities Expand in Colleges
Nuzhat Gul praised the college for developing courts of international standards. She pointed out that more private colleges are now building sports facilities on campus, including pickleball and badminton courts. Gul said,
“Sports infrastructure is a fundamental milestone in educational institutions and colleges. Once it is in place, students are more likely to engage in sports. We must appreciate and encourage college managements that take such initiatives.”
She also mentioned that students at SSM College are actively taking part in many sports activities, showing how better facilities lead to more involvement.
Border Sports Getting Attention
Gul shared that the government is supporting sports in border areas like Poonch, Mendhar, Samba, and Kupwara under the Border Support Development scheme.
“We have organised numerous volleyball events in Poonch under the border sports initiative. Plans are also underway to hold a Kabaddi Super League and Kho-Kho tournaments in these areas,” she said.
She also announced that the Sports Council plans to organise Kho-Kho matches in all border regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sports as a Tool Against Addiction
Talking about rising drug abuse in the region, Gul highlighted the positive role of sports. She said,
“We have conducted various sporting events across Jammu and Kashmir under different government initiatives. Just two days ago, the Kashmir Super League began at TRC Srinagar, attracting thousands of spectators daily. Families, including women, children, young girls, and senior citizens, are attending and enjoying the matches. Sports are providing a platform for social connection and shared enjoyment.”
She stressed that more sports events will help youth stay focused and avoid harmful habits.
