Coimbatore Super Smashers, the city’s first professional pickleball team and part of the Global Sports League, organized the inaugural Coimbatore Pickleball Open at the Pickleball Clubhouse on Trichy Road on August 23 and 24. The event marked Tamil Nadu’s first Pickleball World Rankings (PWR) 200 tournament.
Tournament Significance and Participation
The PWR 200 level represents regional competitions where multiple clubs from different cities compete to earn higher ranking points. PWR 50 represents inter-club tournaments, while PWR 100 covers entry-level competitions. The Coimbatore Open attracted players aiming to advance in the national rankings.
Guests and Official Oversight
Coimbatore District Collector G. Pavankumar attended the event as the Chief Guest. R. Sundar, Managing Trustee of SNR Sons Charitable Trust, was also present. The tournament was officially recognized by the Indian Pickleball Association, with officials ensuring PWR compliance for all open categories.
Prize Money and Coverage
The total prize fund was Rs. 4 lakhs, with additional goodies worth Rs. 3 lakhs. Matches were livestreamed on FanCode and broadcast live on YouTube, allowing fans across India to follow the action.
Franchise Launch
On the opening day, Coimbatore Super Smashers officially launched their franchise team, marking their entry into India’s professional pickleball circuit and signaling the city’s growing role in the sport.
