Pickleball boom in Mangaluru: Pickleball is quickly gaining attention in Mangaluru with the city’s first dedicated courts now open. The fast-growing racquet sport, which combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, has drawn players of all ages. The facility, launched about three weeks ago, is already seeing rising demand.
New Courts Open in City
The pickleball space was started by ‘OneLve’ inside a mall near Bejai. It currently has three courts, with two more being prepared. The in-charge of the facility said, “Our clientele are those in their 30s and above. They come here after their work with friends and enjoy the sport. The demand is growing as the sport is becoming popular in Mangaluru too.”
He described pickleball as “an exciting blend of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.” Easy to learn but fast-paced, the game appeals to both beginners and experienced athletes.
A Sport for All Ages
Pickleball has been praised for being fun, social, and healthy. It gives a full-body workout by improving speed, reflexes, and stamina. It also boosts focus, decision-making, and mood while helping players connect with others through friendly matches and shared enjoyment.
Growth Across Karnataka
According to the Karnataka State Pickleball Association, the sport has expanded rapidly in the past two years. Rajath Kankar MR, founder general secretary of the association, shared that Bengaluru has more than 400 courts and nine other districts, including Mangaluru, have 100 courts. “Our association has been active for the past decade and has seen sports lovers from eight years to 80 years enjoying this. It is mainly played for three reasons— fitness, fun, and competition,” he said.
When asked about safety, Rajath Kankar MR added that pickleball is less risky compared to other racquet sports. He noted, “Injuries are reported when one plays on surfaces other than synthetic courts.”

The rise of pickleball adds a new chapter to Mangaluru’s sports culture, which has long been linked with badminton, tennis, and squash.
