A New Chapter in Mangaluru’s Sports Culture
Known for its badminton and tennis community, Mangaluru is now embracing pickleball. The sport combines tennis, badminton, and table tennis, offering sharp rallies and an easy learning curve. Locals, from young professionals to senior citizens, are finding it both fun and accessible.
“It is not just about physical fitness — though it certainly improves agility, reflexes, and stamina. It is also about mental clarity, focus, and above all, joy,” an official said.
Growing Popularity Across Karnataka
According to Rajath Kankar M R, founder and general secretary of the Karnataka State Pickleball Association, the sport has seen rapid growth in the state.
“Bengaluru alone now has over 400 pickleball courts, while another 100 have sprung up in nine districts, including Mangaluru,” he said.
He also highlighted the wide age range of participants:
“Our association has been active for over a decade, and we’ve seen people from the age of eight to 80 taking up the paddle. People play for three key reasons — fitness, fun, and friendly competition.”
Safe and Inclusive Sport
Addressing concerns about safety, Rajath Kankar M R explained that pickleball is easier on the body than other racquet sports.
“Pickleball is far gentler on the body compared to other racquet sports. Injuries are rare, and when they do occur, it’s usually due to unsuitable playing surfaces. Synthetic courts, like the ones being built in Mangaluru, are ideal,” he noted.
The Future of Pickleball in Mangaluru
With new facilities, enthusiastic players, and community support, pickleball is expected to become a lasting part of Mangaluru’s sports scene. For many residents, it is already more than just a game — it has become a source of fitness, friendship, and a new way of life.
