Goa’s Pickleball Movement: How the Sport is Sweeping the Coast

Goa’s Pickleball Movement: Pickleball, a sport that originated in the USA in 1965, blends tennis, badminton, and table tennis into a unique racquet sport. Its recent introduction to Goa has sparked enthusiasm among players of all ages. Armed with paddles and a plastic ball, this easy-to-learn and highly social game is quickly becoming a favorite pastime.

An Addictive and Accessible Sport

Glen D Costa, an avid promoter of pickleball, describes it as,

“a racquet sport combining tennis, badminton, and table tennis which is easy to learn, social, and addictive. A sport which is perfect for all ages and skill levels.” – (Glen D Costa)

D Costa discovered pickleball abroad and was instantly hooked.

“I was captivated by its addictive nature and welcoming community. Having played nationals in table tennis and getting fatigued, pickleball was the natural progression for me.” – (Glen D Costa)

With its slower ball and smaller court, D Costa believes the sport’s accessibility appeals to diverse players.

“The slower-moving ball and smaller court size make it accessible to players of various ages and skill levels. The social aspect, emphasizing doubles play and camaraderie, sets it apart.” – (Glen D Costa)

Growth Fueled by Passionate Players

The pickleball wave in Goa started with Nishad Shevde, a national-level tennis and table tennis player. Recalling its humble beginnings, Shevde said,

“We used to play on the outdoor badminton court, lowering the net to the appropriate pickleball height. If I’m not mistaken, we were the only ones in Goa playing the sport regularly at that time.” – (Nishad Shevde)

What began with just two players has grown exponentially.

“Pickleball in Goa has grown tremendously, largely through word of mouth. Being a small state, news spreads quickly here. It only takes one person to try the sport, and soon they bring their friends, who then bring their friends, and so on.” – (Nishad Shevde)

From just a few players, the community now boasts over 20 regular participants and three dedicated courts at BPS Club. Multiple venues, including the Chicalim Pickleball Club and Sogofit in Margao, have become hotspots for the sport.

“Today, we have a large group of enthusiastic players, more than 20 in number and three dedicated courts for pickleball at the BPS Club.” – (Nishad Shevde)

Achievements and Challenges

In December 2023, the Goa team participated in the All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) Nationals, marking a milestone for the state.

“This was our first time sending a team to the Nationals. I reached the quarterfinals in the Men’s Open Category, defeating India’s No. 4 player. First-time players Glen and Sanket Nayak also delivered impressive performances.” – (Nishad Shevde)

Shevde said with pride. Newcomers Glen and Sanket Nayak were also impressed with their performances. The Goa Pickleball Association (GPA), led by Aditya Oberoi, has played a pivotal role in the sport’s development.

From organizing tournaments to introducing pickleball to schools, GPA has expanded its reach across Goa. Challenges like sourcing equipment and raising awareness initially hindered growth, but the sport’s appeal and community-driven promotion have overcome these barriers.

“Initially, challenges included finding suitable venues, sourcing equipment, and raising awareness about the sport. Persuading people to try a new, unfamiliar game was a hurdle. But the sport’s inherent accessibility has overcome these initial obstacles.” – (Glen D Costa)

A Thriving Community and Bright Future

With an estimated 100+ active players, pickleball in Goa is more than a trend—it’s a burgeoning revolution. Playful team identities like the “Chica-Pickas” from the Chicalim Pickleball Club highlight the camaraderie that defines the sport.

As D Costa summed it up, pickleball offers “simple rules and basic strokes,” creating a fun and engaging experience for players and spectators. The sport’s steady rise promises to foster deeper community connections and inspire new players across Goa.
