Following the realization that Christian Walker would not be traded during the offseason, the Houston Astros have begun focusing on moving Isaac Paredes. Originally, the team preferred to keep both players, but now sources indicate the Astros are more open to listening to trade offers for Paredes. This marks a significant change since Paredes, an All-Star last season under contract through 2027, carries greater trade value than Walker.
The Astros’ increasing willingness to trade Paredes is also connected to contract considerations. His salary is easier to move, and this may be why an arbitration agreement has yet to be reached. Both sides are seemingly headed toward a hearing, where Paredes is expected to earn approximately $9 million.
Potential Trade Partners and Strategic Opportunities
With the Astros recognizing the need to act before Opening Day, the Boston Red Sox have emerged as the most likely trade destination for Paredes. Boston still requires a third baseman following unsuccessful talks to re-sign Alex Bregman. Although the Red Sox could pursue free agent Eugenio Suárez, Paredes presents an appealing option with upside potential.
Boston’s recent signing of Ranger Suarez to a five-year deal gives the team some flexibility. There is speculation the Red Sox might include one of their talented, cost-controlled pitchers—such as Connelly Ealy or Peyton Tolle—in a package for Paredes. While the Astros’ pitching rotation improved over the offseason, Houston appears ready to consider proposals involving these arms.
The Larger Implications for the Astros’ Roster Plans
Although the Astros’ evolving position on Paredes trade talks is encouraging from a strategic standpoint, it reflects a less desirable circumstance created by previous decisions. Ideally, Paredes would remain a core component of Houston’s contending lineup. However, following a tactically questionable trade deadline, the organization may now feel compelled to part ways with a valuable player.
Astros GM Dana Brown reiterated today that both Yordan Alvarez and Isaac Paredes will be a "full go" when spring training begins.
