Wallburg to Welcome New Pickleball Courts: Wallburg residents will soon have a new recreation option as construction begins on four pickleball courts and a picnic shelter off N.C. Highway 109, next to Cupcake Cuties Cafe & Bakery. The project aims to enhance community engagement and provide a fun activity for residents.
Community Input Shapes Development
Town Manager Mark Swaim, a former 16-year town council member, shared the backstory behind the project.
“We bought the property a couple of years ago,”. “We asked around the community what should we do with the property. This is what we heard. We feel it will have a big impact on the community.”(Town Manager Mark Swaim)
Once the decision to build pickleball courts was made, Swaim and other council members visited several courts in Forsyth, Guilford, and Davidson counties for inspiration. Davidson County Parks and Recreation offers indoor courts at the West Center Street governmental building and is constructing outdoor courts on the same campus.
Features of the New Courts
The new facility will feature four pickleball courts with fencing between them to prevent balls from straying into adjacent courts. The courts will also be illuminated by lights on a timer, allowing residents to play at any time.
“At this time, we don’t plan a system to reserve the courts,”. “It will be first come, first served.”(Town Manager Mark Swaim)
The courts will have an asphalt surface, which is softer on joints, making play more comfortable for participants. Additionally, the picnic shelter will provide seating for residents while they wait to play.
Project Timeline and Funding
Construction of the courts began before Thanksgiving, and if everything goes smoothly, they are expected to open in the spring. The total cost of the project is $387,562, with Wallburg receiving a $150,000 state grant to help cover expenses.
“We’re excited the courts will be beside Cupcake Cuties,”. “They will be great neighbors. We love when we can do things to enhance our community.”(Town Manager Mark Swaim)
Significance for the Community
The addition of pickleball courts represents a significant development for Wallburg, providing residents with a new recreational space. As interest in pickleball continues to grow, these courts will offer an opportunity for people of all ages to engage in the sport and connect with others in the community. This project reflects Wallburg’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents through accessible recreational activities.
