Calgary’s East Village Welcomes The Open: The Open, a new pickleball court combined with a toilet facility, officially opened in Calgary’s East Village on January 9, 2025. This $2.2 million project offers residents and visitors a unique community space featuring a pickleball court and much-needed public washrooms.
A New Amenity for the East Village
Located next to the East Village community garden and dog park, The Open marks the first permanent, publicly accessible washrooms in the area since the closure of washrooms along the Riverwalk. The pickleball court, designed for casual play, is available without the need for booking, making it a flexible and inviting space for both beginners and seasoned players.
Designed for Safety and Community
CMLC Vice President Clare LePan explained that the facility was designed to meet the growing demand for pickleball and to provide social infrastructure in the area. The project aims to be low barrier, much like other local initiatives such as The Bounce, where residents can drop by any time to play. The pickleball court will also serve as the home for the new East Village pickleball club, which will host regular league events.
“The idea was to create a space where people could just come and play, whether or not it’s scheduled,” LePan said.
Award-Winning Design
The facility was designed by architects Public City and won a 2024 Award of Merit by the Canadian Architects Awards of Excellence. The building’s bold design, which integrates colour and transparency, is also praised for enhancing safety. The washbasins are exposed behind glass walls, adding a playful touch while keeping the facility safe and inviting.

Focus on Public Safety
To ensure the safety and cleanliness of the facility, CMLC partnered with RadiCare Ventures, which will staff the washrooms with attendants trained in custodial and de-escalation techniques. RadiCare Managing Director Bill Zheng emphasized that the staff will be trained to support vulnerable populations, offering dignity and respect while maintaining a safe environment for all visitors.
“It’s all about ensuring a clean, safe, and accessible space for everyone,” Zheng explained.
Hours and Accessibility
The washroom facility will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the pickleball court will be available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The hours will be adjusted later in the year as days get longer. CMLC plans to monitor the facility’s use and assess how it impacts the community.
The Open not only provides a new recreational space but also addresses essential public needs by offering safe, accessible washrooms. With pickleball becoming an increasingly popular sport in Calgary, this new community amenity is expected to enhance the East Village’s appeal as a vibrant, growing destination.
