A Cape Breton pickleball club has received a generous donation of over $28,000 to support the development of a new multi-sport facility in Sydney’s south end. This funding, from local Tim Hortons franchise owners Troy Wilson and Karen Hatcher, will help transform the former Centennial Arena into Tomorrow’s Legends Arena.
Supporting Local Sports
The donation allows Pickleball Cape Breton to become a founding member of Tomorrow’s Legends Arena, which is undergoing a $2.9 million redevelopment. Bill Kachafanas, founder of Tomorrow’s Legends, stated, “They will be coming in as an anchor tenant—one of four.” This support will enhance the community’s athletic offerings and increase available court time for players of all ages.
The donation came through Tim Hortons’ Holiday cookie campaign, which ran from December 16, 2024. Wilson and Hatcher expressed their enthusiasm for the project, saying, “We are delighted to be part of this spectacular new facility which will keep young and old alike active in our community.” Their commitment to community engagement through this initiative is evident.
Community Impact
Paul Standing, president of Pickleball Cape Breton, praised Tim Hortons for their local investment in athletics.
“To see such a large corporation like Tim Hortons continually investing locally in athletics in this way is just fabulous,” (Paul Standing).
The contribution is significant for Pickleball Cape Breton as it will help expand participation and accessibility for players of all skill levels.
The new Tomorrow’s Legends Arena will provide a modern space for various sports, not just pickleball. As the project progresses, the community anticipates increased physical activity and opportunities for local athletes. The partnership between the pickleball club and Tim Hortons highlights the importance of corporate sponsorship in enhancing community sports.
