Building a Winning Team Culture

UT Austin’s success goes beyond competition, with a team culture built on loyalty and friendship. The program fosters strong connections among students, alumni, and supporters. Team captain Jack Munro credited this deep-rooted loyalty as a key factor in their achievements.

“What sets us apart is the unwavering loyalty our students, alumni, and friends have for our school and our team, which truly means a lot to us.” – (Munro)

Beyond training and competition, the team emphasizes social events, including team dinners and gatherings, to strengthen relationships. These activities help build a supportive environment where players feel valued and motivated to succeed.

Key Moments and Leadership Impact

UT Austin’s journey to success featured several memorable victories, including a standout performance at the Collegiate Individual Nationals. Munro highlighted the importance of key players, particularly Timmy, whose resilience helped secure a crucial win.

“Timmy was vital to win collegiate thenationals last year. I owe everything to Timmy. He saved seven match points.” – (Munro)

The team also credited their leadership structure and coaching support for guiding them through challenges. Coach Terry McCarthy played a crucial role in organizing logistics and ensuring the team’s smooth operation.

“Leadership was huge—being the captain, having Zoeya Khan lead on the female side, and our coach Terry McCarthy who helped us with everything from setting up to booking flights. We owe so much to Terry; he even gave us our first jerseys when we had none.” – (Munro)

Overcoming Challenges in Collegiate Pickleball

Running a collegiate pickleball program presents unique challenges, from scheduling practices to managing travel logistics. UT Austin has had to develop its structure through trial and error, learning from other programs and adjusting as needed.

To build competitive experience, the team has participated in smaller tournaments like the Texas Super Regional and the Baylor Invitational. These events provide valuable match play and prepare players for national competitions.

Looking to the Future

Winning College Team of the Year is a milestone, but UT Austin aims to build on this success. The program hopes to gain university support, including permanent pickleball courts, to further its development. The team also aspires to win back-to-back national titles while continuing to strengthen its community engagement.

“[The] jobs not finished. Our goal is to win another back-to-back title and keep growing our social side. It’s where you meet people, where we vibe. For kids coming to UT or getting into collegiate pickleball, it’s going to be one of the best decisions of your life.” – (Munro)

UT Austin’s impact extends beyond their wins, influencing collegiate pickleball’s growth and inspiring future players. Their recent recognition at the Dink Awards is a testament to their dedication, teamwork, and pursuit of excellence.
