Scarsdale to Build New Pickleball Courts at Crossway in Recreation Upgrade

Scarsdale to Build New Pickleball Courts: The Village of Scarsdale is set to build six new pickleball courts at Crossway as part of a larger recreational update. The project will also relocate three existing tennis courts, improve parking, and upgrade drainage on the fields. Village staff opted for natural turf over artificial turf for the site.

Pickleball Expansion and Tennis Court Relocation

Pickleball, a rapidly growing sport, will gain dedicated courts at Crossway, replacing three existing tennis courts. These tennis courts will be moved to the other side of the Har-Tru courts, allowing for enhanced parking, with 268 spots planned. The update also includes a new support building with restrooms and a relocated entrance on Mamaroneck Road.

The proposal initially included artificial turf for the fields, but Village staff recommended improving the natural turf instead. “The goal is to balance economics, the environment, and to get more playing time,” said Mayor Justin Arest.

Tennis Court Repairs and Budget Concerns

The Village is also considering $120,000 in repairs for all-weather tennis courts currently used for pickleball. Supervisor Brian Gray noted that the courts have cracks, depressions, and grass growing through them. He also mentioned that noise-blocking panels are causing fence posts to bend.

However, Mayor Arest questioned the expense, as the courts are slated for relocation in the near future. “These three courts are slated to be moved as a part of the Crossway project,” he said, expressing concerns about short-term spending.

Funding and Next Steps

Officials are debating whether to finance the updates through the General Fund or issue bonds. Additionally, while the community has requested more field time, the Recreation Department has not yet provided data on how much demand will be met by these improvements. Supervisor Gray plans to seek estimates from consultants.
