Discover the Game-Changing Youth Pickleball Revolution at South Yuba Club

Youth Pickleball Revolution at South Yuba Club: A new youth pickleball program begins May 1 at South Yuba Club in Grass Valley, led by Pickleball Director Gina Ford and her husband, certified coach Will Ford. The program aims to get kids active outdoors by offering beginner classes and open play sessions after school.

Local Parents Bring Pickleball to Grass Valley Kids

Two local parents who previously ran free pickleball classes at Deer Creek and 7 Hills schools are now launching a program at South Yuba Club. The classes at the schools were well-received, encouraging kids to stay active while learning the game. Gina Ford, one of the creators and the club’s pickleball director said,

“We haven’t heard of any other programs like this happening for kids in our area. The positive outcomes from that free program inspired us to offer a new youth program here at the club. We sent out information for a free six-week series that starts this month to Grass Valley schools. One program for kids ages 9-11 and the other for kids 12-14. It filled up in 24 hours!” – (Gina)

Youth Classes, Open Play, and Equipment Support

Starting May 1, South Yuba Club will offer a free 101 beginner class for kids. Open Play will cost $25 per month and Coached Club Play will be $65 per month. Parents can also choose a $10 drop-in option to try the sport with no long-term commitment.

Open Play for younger kids will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. High school students will have their own Open Play on Wednesdays, followed by club play. Will Ford and the club’s Pickleball Ambassadors will lead the sessions.

“Kids learn so quickly! They pick up the game faster than adults because they have a fresh slate upon which to learn. They don’t have the bad habits most of us bring. And the laughter and joy out there on the courts with them is contagious.” – (gina)

Support from Community and Pickleball Brand

South Yuba Club’s Head Pro, John Hendrickson, a USPTA Tennis Professional and USA Pickleball Ambassador, helped expand the program by solving a big challenge—youth paddles.

“Paddletek went above and beyond for my request. Not only did they donate 20 paddles to us for our youth, but they are top of the line. These kids are so fortunate and this is a very generous gift.” – (Hendrickson)

Club members are also excited to welcome young players to the courts. “They bring an excited energy and curiosity that is a delight to be around and we enjoy watching them get better,” said SY Club player Jim Doolittle.

“Pickleball is about strategy, discipline, connection and joy. Perfect for our young people. Everybody wins when kids are strengthening their bodies and brains in the sun!” – (Doolittle)

A Lasting Impact on Youth and Community

The youth program at South Yuba Club aims to build more than just sports skills. It helps kids stay healthy, focused, and connected to others. With strong community support, new equipment, and growing interest, the program could inspire similar efforts across the region.
