Groundbreaking Begins: Okotoks’ 1M Dollar Pickleball and Tennis Hub Set to Thrill All Ages!

1M Dollar Pickleball and Tennis Hub: Construction has officially begun on the Okotoks Pickleball and Tennis Centre. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 8 at Chinook Arch Way, marking the start of the long-anticipated project. The facility is funded by a $1-million provincial grant, the Town of Okotoks, and community donations.

Building a Community Hub

The centre is being built in northeast Okotoks and is led by the Okotoks Pickleball and Tennis Centre Society. The first phase will include 12 indoor pickleball courts and one indoor tennis court. Later phases will add outdoor courts to the site.

“It’s really an example of what people can do when you put your mind to something,” said Okotoks Pickleball and Tennis Centre Society president Ryan Sawatsky.

He added, “It’s really been such a positive experience for us, and a lot of hard work, but it’s been a lot of fun, and we really do look forward to the next 12 months or so of putting this construction project together and opening this facility.”

Support from the Town and Province

The project received $1 million through the Government of Alberta’s Community Facility Enhancement Program. Additional support came from the Town of Okotoks and community contributions from local businesses and individuals.

Okotoks Mayor Tanya Thorn emphasized the long-term benefits of the project.

“Once complete, the centre will provide year-round recreational opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages and skill levels,” she said. “This centre will become a vibrant hub of year-round activity, welcoming athletes and recreation enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.”

Looking Ahead

The new facility will offer indoor space for both pickleball and tennis. It is expected to open in about a year. Town leaders and community members hope it will bring people together and support both casual play and competitive events in the area.
