Newport Beach Pickleball Event: A pickleball fundraiser in Newport Beach raised over $95,000 to help first-generation college students. The event, called Pickleball for a Purpose, took place April 3 at the Tennis Club at Newport Beach Country Club and was organized by the non-profit KidWorks.
Record-Breaking Success
The fourth annual Pickleball for a Purpose reached its highest fundraising total yet. The event supports students from underserved areas of central Santa Ana. The money will help provide education services and support programs to prepare students for college and careers.
Tournament Results and Community Impact
Newport Beach locals Margarita Gomez, Sherri Skillman, Shelley Ashen, and Keri Olson won the tournament’s competition. Still, the focus remained on the students KidWorks serves. These students benefit from programs designed to guide them through the college process.
“We thank our generous supporters for helping to ensure that our deserving students will continue to benefit from robust college and career programs,” said David Benavides, KidWorks’ chief executive and executive director.

KidWorks and Its Mission
KidWorks was started in 1993 by teacher Jayme Acosta and her husband, youth pastor Larry Acosta. It began with Bible clubs and mentoring. In 1996, the organization opened a community center for youth.
Today, KidWorks also runs a preschool, academic programs, and multiple centers. They often involve local college students as volunteers to give back to the community.
According to the organization, 100% of high school seniors helped by KidWorks over the past 10 years have graduated on time and continued to higher education.
Supporting Futures Through Sports
This event shows how sports can bring people together for a cause. The money raised will help keep college support programs going strong. With steady community support, KidWorks can continue guiding students toward successful futures.
