Manteno Unveils Free Pickleball Lessons at Lucille Thies Park—Bringing Seniors and Youth Together This August

Lucille Thies Park Pickleball Lessons: The Village of Manteno is launching free pickleball lessons for seniors and youth beginning August 1, 2025, at Lucille Thies Park. The announcement came during the July 7 Manteno Village Board meeting as part of new efforts to bring the community together through sports and recreation.

Pickleball for All Ages at Lucille Thies Park

Trustee Samuel Gesky introduced the plan, which includes two free classes each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Senior lessons will run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by youth lessons from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Gesky said, “It’s a place where everybody can get together and put their differences aside and play.”

The Parks and Recreation Department also formed an advisory committee to help organize the new programs. Trustee Samuel Gesky expressed hope that residents would enjoy a break from their daily routines. “Hopefully they can all meet at the park, have fun and look forward to having some pickleball time to get away from the work aspect and have some fun,” he said.

Mayor and Trustees Show Support

Mayor Timothy LaMore showed full support for the pickleball idea and added humor to the meeting. She joked about her age being a concern, saying she might need to “wrap herself in bubble wrap,” but she was still ready for the challenge.

The board hopes the program will encourage community members of all ages to connect, stay active, and enjoy local parks together.

Additional Agenda Items

The board also discussed and approved a consent agenda through an omnibus vote. Trustee Wendell Barry asked about Ordinance 2510 and the method for collecting a uniform garbage fee. After discussion, the agenda was passed.

The Village of Manteno continues to look for new ways to bring people together. With free pickleball lessons starting soon, leaders hope to inspire more residents to enjoy local parks and stay active.
