How Idaho State Students Transformed Old Tennis Courts Into a Pickleball Hotspot—With Lasting Impact

Idaho State University Pickleball Courts Project: Idaho State University recently opened new pickleball courts near Reed Gym, following a $160,000 grant from the Dean’s Excellence Fund. The project was led by Caroline “Smitty” Faure, a professor in the College of Education, and her sports management students, in collaboration with ISU Campus Recreation.

A Student-Led Vision Comes to Life

The project began three years ago when there were no public pickleball courts in Pocatello. Caroline Faure used the opportunity as a real-world learning experience for her Human Performance and Sport Studies students. They completed a full feasibility study, researching the rise of pickleball and its demand in Southeast Idaho.

Students then assessed possible campus locations, looking at cost, space, and long-term use. They prepared a full proposal and presented it to ISU Campus Recreation, Facilities, and Operations.

“I’m big on experiential learning with my students,” said Caroline Faure. “They took great interest in what they were doing and knew that their work was going to leave a lasting legacy.”

Tennis Courts Turned into Multi-Use Space

The final plan used the existing tennis courts outside Reed Gym. Instead of building new courts, the team added portable pickleball nets. These nets can be easily moved, making it quick to switch between tennis and pickleball.

This solution saved money and allowed leftover funds to support other fitness projects on campus.

Long-Term Impact for Students and the Community

This partnership between the College of Education and Campus Recreation supports the HPSS Be Fit (BFIT) program, which offers over 100 fitness-related classes. Students who helped build the project say it gave them valuable experience.

“For me, being a part of these projects was quite special,” said Sabrina Northrup, a former student involved. “They have stretched my abilities, and it was challenging, yet I gained so many practical skills and experiences.”

Caroline Faure added, “This project is one of many that are being done in the College of Education that benefit our students educationally, and I think having the resources available like the Dean’s Excellence Fund makes a huge difference in what we’re able to accomplish with our students in a way that is meaningful.”

Students, faculty, and the local community can now reserve time and learn more about the courts by visiting the ISU Campus Recreation website.
