Turkey Point Pickleball Courts Grand Opening: Turkey Point residents gathered on Sunday, August 31, to celebrate the official opening of new pickleball courts under sunny skies. The event marked the end of a year-long effort by the Turkey Point Pickleball Committee to create a modern, durable space for the whole community.
From an Idea to Reality
The project began as a simple conversation on a front porch. Committee member Doug Johnson explained how a small group of residents—himself, Chris Nelson, Steve Dawe, Rob Ziegler, Ken Hewitt, and Greig Tolar—turned the idea into a full community project. “It began humbly, with a few friends talking on a deck and grew into a true community collaboration,” Johnson said.
Community Support and Funding
Over 500 residents signed petitions backing the project. Local contractors and businesses provided discounts and donations to help build the courts. The Norfolk Community Foundation managed funds and contributed $10,000 to support the project. Johnson said the slogan for the project, “make it happen,” grew into something bigger as residents and the County worked together.
A Place for Everyone
The new courts are designed as a modern and durable hub for residents of all ages. Johnson and the committee have hopes to expand programs and tournaments in the future, making the courts a key part of community life.
