Westport Takes a Step Toward a New Pickleball Court: Westport Kiwanis Park is one step closer to getting a new pickleball court. On November 18, the Decatur County Parks and Recreation board agreed to roll over $2,750 from the 2024 budget to the 2025 budget for the park. Westport is requesting a total of $10,000 from the Parks Department for the project. This amount includes the $2,750 from the current budget and an additional $7,250 from the Springmeyer Grant Trust.
Funding for the Pickleball Court
The board’s decision to reallocate funds marks a significant move towards enhancing recreational facilities in Westport. Parks Department Director Teresa Kovacich highlighted the importance of the project, stating,
“This funding will help us create a welcoming space for pickleball enthusiasts in the community.”(Teresa Kovacich)
The proposed pickleball court is part of a larger initiative to improve parks across Decatur County. During the meeting, recreation and sports coordinator Rob DeHoff presented new equipment added to several parks via a slideshow.
Lease Agreements and Future Plans
In addition to the funding discussion, the board reviewed lease agreements for Harpring Farms and a house at County Park. The lease for Harpring Farms has changed to a two-year contract with annual renewal options, while the lease for the County Park house was modified from a one-year to a six-month contract.
The Parks Department is considering demolishing the house to repurpose the land for recreational uses, including a potential pickleball court or parking area for campers.
Board Changes and Facility Updates
During the meeting, board member Denise Manus announced her resignation due to family commitments. Kovacich noted that Manus had verbally communicated her decision on November 18. A formal resignation letter has not yet been received, but once it is, the board can appoint a replacement member.
Kovacich also discussed ongoing issues at Rebekah Park. While there are no immediate updates regarding parking, she mentioned the possibility of adding more restrooms once a decision is made on that issue.
“It’s a quiet time for a lot of things around here,”,(Teresa Kovacich)
but she assured me that renovations to the restrooms at the parks department building are planned.
