A December Cape Columbia Pickleball Camp at the Lighthouse Resort provided participants with a memorable experience that blended sports with Czech holiday traditions. The camp took a festive turn when the devil, angel, and Mikuláš (Father Christmas) joined in to oversee Czech Christmas celebrations, adding an extra twist to the pickleball lessons.
A Challenging Holiday Experience
The camp, led by tennis and pickleball pro-Roman Sada, started with skill-building drills designed to improve players’ techniques. Known for challenging players’ bad habits, Coach Sada helps participants improve their game with tough but effective advice. As the camp progressed, players grew more comfortable with their skills—until the arrival of the Czech holiday characters.
Coach Sada, dressed as the devil from Czech tradition, signaled the start of the first-ever “Intenzivni Mikuláš Day” pickleball event. This special day, celebrated on Dec. 5 in the Czech Republic, brings unique challenges.
In Czech tradition, good children receive sweets, while naughty ones get coal. Coach Sada’s girlfriend, Sarah Gentry, appeared as the angel, and David Moldenhaur joined as Mikuláš, creating a sense of anticipation and nervousness among the players about the upcoming challenges.
Fun and Fitness with a Twist
Despite initial trepidation, players soon embraced the challenges that came with the Intenzivni Mikuláš Day. The camp’s focus shifted to intense drills and physically demanding exercises. As the day went on, the players became more confident, pushing through the new challenges with the help of their coaches.
Participants appreciated the combination of rigorous pickleball training and the festive atmosphere. By the end of the camp, players had not only improved their pickleball skills but also experienced a unique cultural tradition, making this event one to remember for a long time.
A Memorable Experience
This camp showed how blending sports and tradition can create unforgettable memories. The pickleball players left the Lighthouse Resort with new skills, a deeper appreciation for Czech traditions, and a stronger bond with their fellow participants. The event was a perfect mix of fun, fitness, and culture, leaving players excited for what future camps might bring.
