Arizona’s Largest Pickleball Facility: A 180,000-square-foot pickleball facility is set to change the game in Scottsdale, Arizona. Scheduled to begin construction in 2025, PURE Pickleball & Padel will feature 50 cutting-edge courts and top-notch amenities, making it a destination for players statewide and beyond. The site will also house USA Pickleball, the national governing body.
The project responds to the sport’s growing demand, with nearly 19% of U.S. adults—over 800,000 people—playing pickleball in the past year. PURE aims to address overcrowded courts and long wait times that have become common in Arizona’s pickleball community.
Addressing a Growing Demand
Pickleball’s rapid growth has highlighted a need for better facilities in the Phoenix area. A 2023 study by the Trust for Public Land ranked Phoenix 56th for public pickleball court access per capita, but private facilities have surged in popularity.
Scottsdale, known for its diverse population, is an ideal location for PURE. The facility will serve everyone, from families to Arizona State University students, meeting the needs of a growing demographic. For Scottsdale resident and pickleball player KC Whitaker, the sport is about more than recreation.
“I was a basketball player. (COVID-19) kind of killed that. My best friend (and I), we turned the basketball court into a pickleball court, and I started playing ever since.” – (KC Whitaker)
Driven by Passion and Family
PURE Pickleball & Padel is the brainchild of co-founders Kevin J. Berk and Brett Warner, in partnership with Caliber Co., a private equity real estate firm. The facility was inspired by Berk’s love for pickleball, which began with a family game.
Berk recounted how his mother introduced him and his brother to the sport. “We lost the match—by a lot—and left with our heads low,” he said. That experience motivated them to learn and train in pickleball. Today, Berk plays more than ever, continuing to enjoy the sport with his family.
Impact on Arizona’s Pickleball Scene
Set to open in 2026, PURE Pickleball & Padel is expected to become a major hub for the sport in Arizona. With its state-of-the-art design and commitment to meeting demand, the facility will likely attract players of all ages and skill levels.
As pickleball’s popularity continues to grow, projects like PURE aim to shape the sport’s future, offering modern spaces for enthusiasts while addressing issues like limited court availability. Scottsdale is poised to become a key destination for pickleball players, cementing Arizona’s place in the sport’s expanding landscape.
