Get in the Game: Free Pickleball 101 Class at Admiral Coontz Recreation Center

If your New Year’s resolution is to learn about pickleball, a Free Pickleball 101 Class will be offered on Tuesday, January 7. The class will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center.

Learn About America’s Fastest-Growing Sport

The class is organized by local pickleball enthusiasts Bill Baker and Tom Batenhorst. They aim to introduce participants to pickleball, which is often described as America’s fastest-growing sport.

Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, using a paddle and a plastic ball with holes. The game is designed for players of all ages and skill levels, making it an accessible choice for newcomers. With simple rules, it serves as a great introduction to racquet sports.

Hannibal’s Pickleball Community Grows

Hannibal Parks and Recreation has been offering pickleball leagues for 10 years. To support this growing interest, they have recently updated the tennis courts at Huckleberry Park to create pickleball-specific courts. This upgrade allows more residents to participate in the sport and enjoy the facilities.

Registration for the winter pickleball league is currently open and will close at 5 p.m. on January 14. Games will be held at the Recreation Center at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting January 21. This league provides an opportunity for players to practice their skills in a friendly and competitive environment.

Community Engagement and Opportunities

Bill Baker expressed excitement about the class, saying,

“We want to share the joy of pickleball with everyone. It’s a fun way to stay active and meet new people.”(Bill Baker)

“The more people we can get playing, the better. Pickleball is a sport that really brings the community together.”(Tom Batenhorst)

As interest in pickleball continues to grow in Hannibal, events like “Pickleball 101” play a crucial role in expanding the sport’s reach. The class not only teaches the game but also fosters connections among players, helping to create a vibrant pickleball community.
