Powell River Racquet Centre Closure Sparks Push for New Pickleball Facility

Powell River Racquet Centre Closure: The Powell River Racquet Centre will shut down permanently on February 8, leaving local tennis, pickleball, and badminton players without a dedicated space. Despite operating at a profit, the facility is closing because the landlord has found a tenant willing to pay higher rent.

The centre, located at 4320 Joyce Avenue, has been a hub for racquet sports since 2017. Initially operated privately, it was taken over by the Powell River Sports and Fitness Society in 2019.

Pickleball’s Growth at the Racquet Centre

Pickleball played a major role in the facility’s rising popularity. Treasurer Mike Kenyon explained that the centre initially struggled to cover operating costs but eventually thrived due to the growing interest in pickleball.

However, the rent increase made it impossible for the centre to continue operating.

Future Plans for Pickleball in Powell River

The qathet Pickleball Association (qPA), which shared the space with the racquet centre, is now seeking land to build a new indoor pickleball facility. President Susan Young said their time at the racquet centre was always temporary.

“It’s not a space where we can hold any kind of sanctioned tournament,” (Susan Young).

She highlighted the need for a proper facility, as outdoor courts are often unusable in Powell River’s rainy winters.

Advocating for City Support

The qPA has a business plan and is prepared to fundraise for an eight-court indoor pickleball facility. Young and qPA director Lynn O’Reilly believes such a facility could boost sports tourism and create new opportunities for the community.

“We think there are at least 250 to 300 pickleball players in Powell River,” (Susan Young).

She emphasized the sport’s accessibility, stating that new players can learn quickly and start enjoying the game.

Demanding a Pickleball Facility to Foster Community

Young urged the city to act more urgently in supporting their request for land.

“We are disappointed with the fact that they haven’t prioritized us,” (Susan Young).

Both Young and O’Reilly envision the facility as more than just a pickleball space.

“My big dream would be to have the 55-plus BC Games here,” (Susan Young),

citing the city’s existing amenities like a pool and running track.

A dedicated pickleball facility, they believe, could benefit players of all ages and bring economic benefits to the city.

“This is an opportunity for the city to step up and support change and growth,”(Susan Young).
