Effingham County Expands Recreational Space with New Pickleball Courts

Effingham County Expands Recreational Space: Effingham County Manager Tim Callanan is proud of the improvements made to McCall Park, once a simple sandlot, which has become a popular community hub. The $1 million upgrade, completed in 2022, included a multi-purpose field, dog parks, a basketball court, and more.

The park is constantly in use, with the baseball field being particularly popular.

“You cannot fit any more people in that park,”. “The baseball field is always being used. It drives you to do more.”(Tim Callanan)

Expanding Opportunities for Recreation

The upgrades to McCall Park are just the beginning. Effingham County is committed to improving all of its parks. Each park will receive some form of renovation, though the exact costs for each project are still being determined.

One of the county’s most well-known parks, the Clarence E. Morgan Complex, is set to receive a splash pad and multi-purpose fields. Seven new fields will be added, including one with artificial turf to host tournaments.

“We’re going to be doing seven of those – almost like a stadium field,” (Tim Callanan).

Baker Park Renovations

Baker Park, located in Meldrim, will also soon see improvements. The park, which has not been updated in 20 years, will receive a dog park, a paddle boat launch, and pickleball courts. Renovations to the tennis and basketball courts will also take place, along with updates to the pavilion.

“It’s imperative that we do whatever we have to do to make sure all parks meet the standards of Clarence Morgan,” (Tim Callanan).

New Trail and Future Growth

A new addition to the county’s park system will be Truelton Trail, a pathway designed for runners, walkers, and cyclists. The trail aims to connect neighborhoods such as Old Marlow to Pine Park and Sand Hill Park.

As the county grows, the need for additional park space is becoming clear. Callanan stated that the county is exploring new properties to support the growing population.

“For growth, we really got to expand our park offerings,”. “I think people are going to get super excited about what’s to come.”(Tim Callanan)

The upgrades to Effingham County’s parks are just the beginning of a broader effort to improve recreational opportunities for all residents, ensuring they have the space to enjoy outdoor activities.
