WMU’s New Latitude 42 Pickleball Complex: A Game Changer for Local Players

WMU’s New Latitude 42 Pickleball Complex: A generous donation from Ruth and Mike Stoddard, owners of Latitude 42 Brewing Co., will help fund a new pickleball facility at Western Michigan University’s athletic club. The $7 million complex will be located at 2001 S. 11th St. in Oshtemo Township and is set to open in June.

New Facility Overview

The 37,000-square-foot indoor facility will feature 13 championship-sized courts attached to the north side of the club’s building. This addition will increase the total number of pickleball courts at West Hills Athletic Club to 21, making it one of the largest venues for pickleball in the area.

Community-Focused Development

The Stoddards have chosen to keep the donation amount private but expressed their excitement about the project.

“It is our hope that the whole community will enjoy playing there,”. “We look forward to this world-class wellness asset becoming a gathering spot for the faculty, staff, and students who already enjoy West Hills.”(they said in a press release)

Addressing Growing Demand

Currently, pickleball and tennis players at the club share space, which can lead to conflicts over court availability. Betsy Sell, general manager of West Hills Athletic Club, explained the need for dedicated space:

“Creating a separate space for pickleball will allow us to address the different needs of each sport and accommodate exponential growth for years to come.”(Betsy Sell)

Facility Features

The new pickleball complex will include a lounge area, bathrooms, and an outdoor patio. Players using the courts will also have access to the club’s amenities, such as locker rooms and a fitness center. Individual memberships at West Hills Athletic Club cost $60 a month, with automatic membership available for WMU employees.

Impact on the Community

The new facility is part of a growing trend in the Kalamazoo area, with several new pickleball complexes on the way. This development reflects the increasing popularity of the sport and the community’s desire for more recreational facilities. The Latitude 42 Pickleball Complex is expected to serve as a central hub for players of all ages and skill levels, promoting health and wellness in the region.

With the anticipated opening in June, the new facility will likely become a key destination for pickleball enthusiasts and a source of pride for the community.
