Community Support and Vision
Ray Estes discovered pickleball in 2020 and recognized a need for an indoor facility in the area.
“I’ve always wished there was a Picklr closer to me in Wyoming, and I felt that one would succeed in Cheyenne,” (Ray Estes).
His vision for the Picklr aims to serve the community and promote the sport.
Kyle Yates, a recent Pickleball Hall of Fame inductee at age 29, expressed excitement about the new facility.
“I’ve seen the impact on other communities and [I’m] excited to see it expand to Cheyenne,” (Kyle Yates).
He highlighted pickleball’s inclusive nature, stating, “It’s all about the people.”
Local resident Michael McColl appreciated the chance to challenge Yates.
“I am just glad Cheyenne has a facility like this,” he said, joking, “Don’t go for his forehand.”(Michael McColl )
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The Picklr Cheyenne includes eight indoor courts with professional-style surfacing, a pro shop, and a private event space. Services offered include lessons, league play, tournaments, and open play. Ray plans to introduce junior club teams for local high schools and junior highs and expects to expand open play times soon.
The Estes family has already signed up 150 local members. They hope to increase their membership by hosting large tournaments and corporate events.
“Wherever I go, people are extremely friendly, inclusive, and kind,” (Ray Estes),
aiming to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Pickleball’s Growing Popularity
Pickleball has a rich history, dating back to 1965 when it was invented at a vacation home in Washington. Ray believes the sport’s growth has accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It really took off with COVID because it felt like a safe way to socialize,” (Ray Estes).
The sport’s popularity may even lead to its Olympic debut by 2032.
A Successful Opening Day
During the grand opening, all eight courts were filled with enthusiastic players. The lively atmosphere was enhanced by the sound of paddles striking the pickleball. Attendees participated in 12-minute games across beginner, novice, intermediate, and advanced brackets. The event also showcased the Erne ball machine and Wingfield AI Coaching demos.
Will McColl, who has played pickleball for three years, received valuable advice during the clinics. “Kyle told me to bend my knees,” he said with a smile.
Ray and Tanya expressed gratitude to the community for making The Picklr Cheyenne a reality. They believe local enthusiasm for the sport will continue to grow as more residents experience the facility’s amenities. “I quickly got drawn into the pickleball addiction,” Ray shared. He plans to play whenever business duties allow, enjoying the friendly competition.
