How Pickleball is Connecting Marshall Residents: Residents of Marshall are embracing pickleball, a fun sport combining elements of tennis and table tennis. With origins dating back to 1965 in Washington State, pickleball is gaining traction as an accessible game for all ages.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is played with a hard paddle and a plastic ball with holes. The game can be played in singles or doubles. Players hit the ball over a net, and while the rules can be confusing at first, they become clear with practice.
The game has a short learning curve, making it easy to pick up. It’s low impact, making it suitable for players of all ages, especially seniors seeking exercise. The sport promotes balance, coordination, and cognitive skills through quick reactions and strategic thinking.
Growing Interest of Pickleball in Marshall
Local players are flocking to pickleball leagues at the YMCA, outdoor courts at Legion Field, and Marshall Middle School, organized by Marshall Community Recreation.
The Marshall Area Pickleball, in partnership with Avera, hosted a tournament during the Sounds of Summer celebration in August. This event attracted players from nearby towns, hoping to become an annual highlight.
At the YMCA, it’s common to see around 20 players engaging in pickup games. Alison Ufkin, a player from Minneota, shared her journey of starting pickleball.
“I thought it looked fun, I would see the other pickleballers playing down in the gym and so I gathered up my courage and just went down there one day and they taught me how to play.” – (Alison Ufkin)
“I found that the rules were kind of tricky but once you start playing the rules kind of fall into place and then you get used to them.” – (Alison Ufkin)
Ufkin enjoys the sport not only for the exercise but also for its social aspects, which have boosted her mental health.
“It’s been wonderful — the social aspect of playing pickleball is very invigorating…it’s just super fun. It’s a happy sport to me. Very happy.” – (Alison Ufkin)
A Community of Friends
The social side of pickleball is a significant draw. Players support and encourage one another, creating a friendly atmosphere.
“All the pickleballers that play down there are very friendly and want you to be better pickleballers.” – (Alison)
“I want people to feel free to go down there, like I did and just ask for help if you’ve never played before. You can borrow a paddle from the YMCA, you don’t need any equipment except tennis shoes and some comfortable clothes. Tell people you haven’t played before and they’ll help you out.” – (Alison)
“I play at my level and I’m not going to dive after the ball, because I’m smarter than that. I try not to be too crazy down there …and the people my age are pretty sensible about knowing their limitations but we still manage to have a great time playing.” – (Alison)
She encourages newcomers to borrow equipment and join in. Players of all skill levels enjoy the game. James LeRoy, a player in his mid-20s, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It’s quickly become (his) favorite thing.”
“I like whacking it so hard at your opponents they don’t see it coming.” – (Claire Clarke)
Abbey LeRoy emphasized the friendships formed through the sport, saying,
“I like the social aspect of it — we’ve made a lot of new friends and have even made a little ‘game gang.’” – (Abbey LeRoy)
