The Rotary Club of St. Albert is gearing up for its second-annual I Love Pickleball Charity Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 15 at Raise Athletics in St. Albert. The event will feature fun for all ages and skill levels, raising funds for local charities.
The tournament is open to everyone, including beginners, with various events such as women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Organizers aim to bring the community together for a day of sports and charity.
Daniela Ionitescu, a member of the Rotary Club and a pickleball enthusiast, believes the event will help people connect, stay active, and enjoy time with family.
“I play, my husband plays, my son plays. So it became like a family sport. It brings together all ages. I can play with my 15-year-old son or my father. That’s special about pickleball.” – (Ionitescu)
Charity Impact
The tournament also serves as a fundraiser for local organizations. Last year, the event raised $13,000, which was donated to causes like Neutral Ground, the St. Albert Food Bank, and other charities. Ionitescu credits the St. Albert Pickleball Club for its support and help in organizing the event.
“Without the support and expertise of the St. Albert Pickleball Club, we couldn’t have achieved such an outstanding result.” – (Ionitescu)
Youth and Special Olympics Participation
The tournament is open to players of all ages and skill levels, with discounted entry fees for youth under 17. Organizers are also inviting members of the Special Olympics community to participate. Two courts will be dedicated to Special Olympics players, ensuring they feel included.
“We encourage the beginners and youth especially to join. We’ve created brackets for youth under 17 with discounted entry fees.” – (Ionitescu)
Registration Details
The entry fee for one event is $70, with discounted fees of $35 for those under 17. Special Olympics participants can join for free. Registration is open until Feb. 5, and Ionitescu hopes to attract around 122 players, similar to last year.
