Pickleball Facilities Coming to Northern Kentucky University: Northern Kentucky University has received a historic $3 million commitment from the Edward G. Reynolds Charitable Trust. The funds will support the design and construction of a new outdoor tennis complex and a dedicated pickleball facility, with the project expected to open in 2026.
The donation marks the largest contribution to NKU’s athletics program, making it a milestone for the university. The NKU Board of Regents approved the plans during a meeting on January 15, and design work is set to begin immediately. The new pickleball facilities will replace the existing tennis courts off Kenton Drive in Campbell County.
A Transformational Investment for NKU Athletics
Christina Roybal, vice president and director of athletics, described the gift as a “transformational investment” for NKU. She added,
“It will enable us to invest in our facilities for student-athletes while also introducing pickleball as an exciting new recreational activity for our students as well as the community.”-(Christina Roybal)
The new complex will include the NKU Tennis Complex, with its premier court named the Maria Reynolds Tennis Court. The pickleball facility will be named the Reynolds Family Pickleball Facility, emphasizing the donor’s significant contribution to the project.
Impact on Student-Athletes and the Community
Brian Nester, head coach for men’s and women’s tennis at NKU, highlighted the benefits of the new facilities. He said,
“This investment will provide an excellent environment for training and competition, and will not only enhance the student-athlete experience, but will allow us to continue to attract and retain high-level talent.”-(Brian Nester)
The facilities are designed to enhance both athletics and recreational activities for students and the broader community. NKU’s tennis teams, competing in the Horizon League, are expected to benefit from the state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Part of NKU’s Larger Campus Growth
The project is part of a broader expansion at NKU, which includes the $86 million addition to the Dorothy Westerman Herrmann Science Center, slated for completion soon. With over 14,000 students, NKU continues to grow as the third-largest university in the region.
