Players shared insights into their journeys, ambitions, and the growing pickleball community.
Young Talent: Elsie Hendershot
At just 11 years old, Mapleton native Elsie Hendershot is already a standout player with a DUPR score of 4.3. Despite only two years of experience, her skill earned her mentorship from professional player Allyce Jones and a spot on Team Boydston for the playoffs.
“When she really caught fire was with Allyce Jones. Allyce called us up and said, ‘Hey, I’m a great pro, but I’m an even better coach and I’d love to spend some time with your daughter.’” – (Cade Hendershot)
“She’s learned valuable life skills from playing such a competitive sport,” Hendershot said. “It’s helped me be able to control my emotions a lot.” Her team finished second in the tournament, and she remains unfazed by competing against older opponents.
From Tennis to Pickleball: Jacob Tullis
Jacob Tullis, a former BYU tennis player with a 4.7 DUPR rating, joined Team Smith for the playoffs. Tullis noted a shift in his approach to sports since transitioning to pickleball.
“When I was playing tennis, it was a lot of pressure — and I love tennis, nothing bad to say about tennis. I loved it, but this energy is so fun. Everyone loves each other and it’s just really, really fun — a really good time.” – (Jacob Tullis)
Tullis also highlighted the supportive community he’s found in pickleball, emphasizing the lasting friendships and vibrant atmosphere.
“I feel like I’ve built some really long-lasting friendships. The outcome of this is we’re still going to keep playing and keep having a good time. Even the winners here; we’re all going to be friends.” – (Jacob Tullis)
Aiming for the Top: Dodo Kong
Dodo Kong, originally from Dongguan, China, represented Team Hall, which won first place in the playoffs. With a DUPR score of 5.36 and aspirations to join the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA), Kong is on track to achieve her goal of becoming a top player in all divisions.
“Pickleball (has) affected my life in many ways. It keeps my lifestyle healthy and active. It helps me to get out of my shell and meet various people.” – (Kong)
