Inaugural Pickleball Tournament in Bangor Raises 2,000 Dollar for Boys and Girls Club!

Inaugural Pickleball Tournament in Bangor: Community members came together to support a Bangor youth group by participating in a pickleball tournament this weekend. The Boys and Girls Club of Bangor held their first “Paddle for a Purpose” pickleball event at the Armstrong Tennis Center in Hampden on Sunday.

Excitement for a Good Cause

“There are so many people that are just in love with pickleball, and we thought we would try out a pickleball fundraiser tournament,” said Tim Surrette, Board Chair of the Boys and Girls Club of Bangor. “We have 16 teams signed up 32 individuals, great sport for those that are looking to do something in the winter.”

The Boys and Girls Club aims to help K-12 students in Bangor adopt healthy lifestyles and achieve academic success.

“The Boys and Girls Club of Bangor was started, basically to serve the kids who need us most in the community, the kids who are disadvantaged and may not have the resources to access out of school time programming,” said Cat Myatt, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club.

Fundraising Success

According to organizers, the event raised close to $2,000, with all proceeds supporting the club’s mission.

“We have participants out here who are supporting a great cause, they’re becoming aware of a need in the community and they’re helping us to fulfill that need and we have some young people here today who are also learning about a new sport that some of them haven’t tried yet.” – (Catt)

Club members Aislyn Parsons and Abigale Bilogeau noted the valuable skills they’ve gained since joining. “Teamwork, sharing, being kind, responsibilities, like it’s everything,” said Parsons. “Self confidence especially,” added Bilogeau.

Commitment to Community Engagement

This year, the Boys and Girls Club is prioritizing more community engagement.

“We’re partnering with a lot of new organizations to bring in a variety of different activities and that’s one of our goals this year to make our opportunity center more accessible to all.” – (myatt)

The tournament concluded with the following winning teams:

  • Men’s 3.5: Tyler Rowe and Justin Stewart
  • Women’s 3.5: Joy Stewart and Chele Fuller
  • Mixed 3.5: Tammy and Kevin Pinkham
