Rainer and Julie Martens have returned to lead the Pictona pickleball complex in Ormond Beach after retiring six months ago. They announced their comeback on January 17, 2025, following the unexpected departure of former CEO John Phillips. Rainer is now the interim CEO, and Julie serves as interim associate director.
The Martens decided to stay for up to two years, explaining that retirement didn’t suit them. “Retirement does not fit my genetic makeup,” Rainer stated after a game of pickleball.
Unexpected Leadership Changes
The couple stepped back into their roles after Phillips left suddenly. Rainer expressed surprise at Phillips’ resignation, noting, “He represented Pictona well in the community.” Phillips has not commented on his departure.
The Martens aim to maintain continuity at Pictona. Their experience as founders is crucial for the complex’s operations, especially during this transition.
Future Plans for Pictona
The Martens plan to work closely with the board during their time at Pictona. They intend to notify the board well in advance before any final retirement. Their return is significant for Pictona, as they bring stability and a wealth of experience to the facility.
The couple’s commitment could positively influence the community and keep the pickleball complex thriving as the sport continues to grow in popularity.
