Public Feedback Drives Plans for New Pickleball Amenities in Northfield

New Pickleball Amenities in Northfield: The City of Northfield is considering improvements to Sechler Park, focusing on adding pickleball amenities based on public feedback. Pickleball has become the fastest-growing sport in the U.S., with nearly 14 million players. In Northfield, 173 players participated in organized pickleball events this past year.

Growing Popularity of Pickleball

This past April, Northfield organized its first pickleball group, which gathered 173 local players. Throughout the summer, this group met with city officials to share ideas for the future design of Sechler Park.

According to a survey of players, 83% play at Riverside Park during the outdoor season, while the remaining 17% play at other locations. The primary request from players is for more outdoor courts, either at Riverside Park or another site. They also seek improvements to current facilities, such as lighting, a seating pavilion, and bathrooms. Sechler Park was identified as the preferred location for additional pickleball courts.

Addressing Community Needs

The survey also highlighted a gap in available amenities. Currently, Northfield Parks primarily offer activities for youth and younger adults. Approximately 78% of pickleball players in Northfield are over 50. In comparison, there is space for around 300 kids across playgrounds, while only 16 spots are available for pickleball players.

Anna Springer, one of the designers of Sechler Park, stated that the final design includes ample space for new pickleball courts. She emphasized that they worked closely with the pickleball group to ensure the design met community needs. During the December 3rd City Council meeting, she reiterated the importance of accommodating this growing sport.

Looking Forward

The proposed improvements to Sechler Park could significantly enhance local pickleball opportunities. If approved, the addition of new courts may encourage more community members to participate in the sport, fostering a stronger pickleball community in Northfield.
