Pickleball Tournament in Wichita Falls: Whether someone is a seasoned pickleball player or trying the sport for the first time, their participation in an upcoming tournament could make a significant difference. Southern Grit Advocacy, a local non-profit focused on educating against human trafficking, is hosting its second annual pickleball tournament. The event is designed to raise awareness and funds to combat human trafficking within the community.
Rallying for a Cause
“People come together, and you get to know the people more,” said Chris Matthews, a player and volunteer for the event. Matthews emphasized the power of social connections made through the game. “You get in discussions with people that you never would have before.”
Southern Grit Advocacy launched its first pickleball fundraiser in December 2023, and it was a huge success. Executive Director Vicky Payne said the turnout was amazing, calling it “the biggest one we’ve had in Wichita Falls.” This year, the non-profit hopes to continue that success with the upcoming tournament on Saturday, February 15, at the Pickleball Hanger.
Combating Human Trafficking Through Awareness
The event isn’t just about pickleball—it’s about making a difference.
“We empower students with skills and knowledge to recognize when someone’s trying to exploit them or take advantage of them.” – (Payne)
The goal is to help individuals protect themselves from trafficking. Pickleball’s accessibility makes it a perfect platform for this cause.
“Almost everybody that plays it likes it, about 90%. If you play it, you play again. It’s so easy to start, and anybody can just start hitting.” – (Matthews)
How You Can Help
The pickleball tournament, while fun, also raises funds that directly support Southern Grit Advocacy’s mission.
“It also brings in funds to help accomplish our mission because we are totally dependent on people to donate.” – (Payne)
The non-profit provides its services free of charge, and donations are key to sustaining their work. After last year’s tournament saw about 116 players, the non-profit is aiming for at least 100 participants this year. However, they still need over 50 players to sign up. The event will run until Sunday, February 16, if enough players join.
Each player must have a partner, and duos can sign up for $35 per person. The pickleball tournament will take place at the Pickleball Hanger, 5200 Henry S Grace Fwy.
