Badger State Games Highlights Pickleball: The Badger State Games attracted nearly 300 competitors this weekend at the Wausau Tennis Center, showcasing the growing popularity of pickleball. Despite colder weather, players gathered to test their skills in this engaging sport that has gained traction since its inception in 1965.

Pickleball’s Rise During the Pandemic

Pickleball, which combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, saw a surge in interest in recent years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many players discovered the sport as a way to stay active while social distancing.

“I was looking for something to do during Covid (and) found pickleball. (I) got addicted to it super-fast.” – (Emerson Lehmann)

“I started right before Covid, so we played a lot during Covid. I’ve been playing almost five years now.” – (Anna Dubois)

A Central Hub for Competition

Lehmann, an anchor at WBAY in Green Bay, expressed excitement about the tournament’s location.

“It’s a central hub for competing against some of the best players throughout the state. We’ve got some of the top players from the Madison area, Green Bay, Fox Valley, and Milwaukee. It’s like the melting pot for Badger State.” – (Lehmann)

Social Aspect of Pickleball

Winning is important, but many players emphasize the community aspect of pickleball.

“We see a lot of the same people, but also new people. At every pickleball tournament, there’s at least a couple of new people. Everyone’s been super friendly. Pickleball is kind of a social sport, so I feel like it kind of comes with it.” – (Dubois)

The event not only highlighted competitive spirit but also fostered friendships among players. With more people discovering pickleball, the sport continues to grow in Wisconsin, bringing players together from various backgrounds.
