The Rise of FGCU Pickleball Club: From Small Beginnings to 150 Members

The FGCU Pickleball Club has become one of the most popular clubs on campus. Over the last two years, the club has increased its membership and begun competing at the collegiate level, now boasting 150 active members.

Club Growth and Achievements

Tyler Calka, president of the pickleball club, has seen impressive growth.

“We started with just a few members and now we have 150.” – (Calka)

This expansion led the club to compete in a tournament in Daytona last December. Their best Division II men’s doubles team, Everett Hill and Grant Twible, placed tenth out of 19 teams. Another team, Tyler Walker and Grant Tillet, placed 16th.

Player Performances

The club’s continued growth has brought pride to its members. In singles events, Grant Twible and Everett Hill placed third and fourth, respectively, which influenced their bracket placements. Calka emphasized the club’s desire to improve further, saying,

“We would like to add more travel players and get some DI competitors to check out the club.” – (Calka)

Vice President’s Perspective

Eric Gunns, vice president of the club, has played a vital role in its growth. He expressed excitement for the future, sharing,

“Some of my favorite memories have been just enjoying the time that I’ve spent playing pickleball with my friends.” – (Eric Gunns)

The consistent attendance at practices is encouraging for the club’s future.

Fundraising for Improvements

Looking ahead, the club plans to raise funds to enhance their equipment.

“The fundraising funds may be used to buy higher quality paddles or more pickleballs.” – (Eric Gunns)

He encourages newcomers to join, noting the intimidation some may feel but emphasizes the community aspect of the club.

Club Activities

The FGCU Pickleball Club meets on Fridays and Sundays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Recreation and Wellness Center, where they provide paddles and balls for players.
