Pickle in the Peaks Tournament Set to Return in Summit County

Pickle in the Peaks Tournament: The eagerly anticipated Pickle in the Peaks tournament is gearing up for its fifth year, promising another thrilling showcase of the sport’s growing popularity in Summit County. From July 18 to 20, Rainbow Park and Trent Park will be abuzz with activity as over 134 teams from across the state and beyond converge for three days of intense competition.

A Premier Summer Fixture

Hosted by the Town of Silverthorne in collaboration with the Summit County Pickleball Association (SCPA), the event has established itself as a premier summer fixture. The tournament will adopt a round-robin format, ensuring that every team gets ample playtime. Medals will be awarded to the top three teams in each division, adding an extra layer of excitement to the proceedings.

Summit County Pickleball Association’s Impact

The rise of pickleball in Summit County is largely attributed to the dedicated efforts of the Summit County Pickleball Association, a nonprofit organization founded in 2018. The SCPA, which operates entirely with volunteers, has been instrumental in promoting the sport’s growth through a variety of programs and events. Their work includes everything from social gatherings and pickle-potluck brunches to skill clinics and tournaments.

Building on Past Successes

This year’s tournament promises to build on the success of the previous four events, which have seen a dramatic increase in participation. Last year, the tournament attracted 120 teams in men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles categories, along with 17 singles competitors. Players from as far afield as Florida, Illinois, and Arizona made the journey to compete, underscoring the event’s expanding reach.

Commitment to Accessibility and Growth

The SCPA’s commitment to accessibility is a key factor in the sport’s burgeoning popularity. They offer a range of activities to both members and non-members, including drop-in play times seven days a week during the summer. Additionally, the organization is focused on creating new talent, with youth and beginner programs in collaboration with the Silverthorne Recreation Center.

As anticipation builds for the 2024 Pickle in the Peaks, the SCPA and the Town of Silverthorne are poised to deliver another memorable tournament experience. With its blend of competitive spirit and community engagement, the event continues to be a testament to the growing appeal of pickleball in the region.
