Hadley’s New Pickleball Courts: Hadley is taking steps toward building new outdoor pickleball and basketball courts. The Select Board and School Committee approved using land next to Hopkins Academy along Route 9. The Hadley Park and Recreation Department is preparing a funding request to the Community Preservation Act (CPA) Committee to support the project.
The planned Hadley Pickleball & Recreation Center could feature up to four pickleball courts and a full-size basketball court.
The facility would be built on greenspace between Hopkins Academy and the former Russell School. The estimated cost for the project is $323,630, which includes a Sport Court tile surface, fencing, and solar-powered lighting.
Developing the Plan
Park and Recreation Director Amy Jennings emphasized the importance of careful planning. The project’s timeline depends on the completion of the Hopkins Academy geothermal project to avoid conflicts.
Jim Shea, chairman of the Park and Recreation Committee, said the courts would benefit residents of all ages, from children to seniors. He noted that the only other outdoor basketball court for kids is at Hadley Elementary School.
Exploring the Options
To better understand court design and materials, Jennings and committee members visited pickleball facilities at Buttery Brook Park in South Hadley and Nonotuck Park in Easthampton. They also examined the new pickleball courts under construction at Ray Ellerbrook Field in Northampton.
Shea explained that the proposed courts could be used year-round, with a possible ice skating rink in winter. However, he cautioned against ice hockey due to potential safety concerns.
Addressing Community Concerns
One concern raised by Select Board member Randy Izer is ensuring that the courts primarily serve Hadley residents. He questioned whether voters would support using CPA funds if non-residents frequently use the courts.
Shea responded that many Hadley residents currently travel out of town to play pickleball. He also noted that pickleball players often participate in leagues that move between different locations.
Looking Ahead
With approvals in place, the next step is finalizing the funding request and coordinating with the Hopkins Academy geothermal project. If approved, the courts would offer a new recreational space for Hadley residents of all ages.
