Situated at 5813 and 5825 Washington Road SW, the site is strategically located near U.S. 17 and Old Shallotte Road, primed to host the envisioned complex comprising six outdoor pickleball courts, an 800-square-foot building, and ample parking. Spearheading this initiative is the Carolina Pickleball Company, as detailed in the submitted site plan.
The staff report on the rezoning highlighted that the N.C. Department of Transportation confirmed Washington Road SW has ample capacity to handle the increased traffic. Additionally, a biodiversity and wildlife assessment revealed that the site has minimal wildlife that would be affected by the development.
Existing Facilities and Growing Popularity
Notably, this venture would not be Brunswick County’s maiden pickleball facility. Several communities and municipalities across the county already boast pickleball courts, with the House of Pickleball (HOP) in Leland standing out for its comprehensive indoor amenities. Situated at 115 Kay Todd Road, the HOP has been a pioneer since its inception in 2018, offering indoor, climate-controlled pickleball experiences.
Pickleball’s ascent as a dynamic, sociable sport amalgamating elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong has fueled its popularity surge in Brunswick County. The HOP, recognizing this burgeoning demand, expanded its capacity in 2023, doubling its court inventory from six to an impressive twelve, solidifying its role as a pivotal hub for pickleball enthusiasts in the tri-county area
Approval and Next Steps
Brunswick County planning staff recommended approval for the conditional rezoning, and the planning board unanimously approved the request. However, this approval does not authorize construction. Site plan approval, building permits, and other necessary authorizations must be obtained before construction can begin.
