Woodcreek Club Pickleball Courts Plan Awaits Columbia Planning Commission Approval

Woodcreek Club Pickleball Courts: The Woodcreek Club in Elgin is planning to add eight new pickleball courts to its property, pending approval from the City of Columbia’s Planning Commission. The courts would be built west of Club Ridge Road, near the club’s tennis courts, and include a shaded pavilion.

Pickleball’s Growing Popularity in the Midlands

Pickleball, a mix of tennis, Ping-Pong, and badminton, has gained nationwide popularity. The New York Times recently described it as one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S. The sport’s expansion in the Midlands reflects this trend, with new clubs and facilities opening throughout the area.

Woodcreek Club’s proposal aligns with this growth. If approved at a Columbia Planning Commission meeting this week, the courts would provide another venue for local players. The addition of a shaded pavilion would enhance player experience by offering seating and respite from the sun.

Other Pickleball Expansions in the Region

The Woodcreek project is part of a larger wave of new pickleball developments in the Midlands. In March, a 46,000-square-foot indoor facility called “The Picklr” will open on Two Notch Road. Additionally, “24 Hour Pickleball,” a Lexington-based club, launched last year.

The Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) is also bringing major events to the region. The PPA Challenger Series will hold its first season event at the new 16-court Cayce Pickleball Complex from March 28-30.

Meanwhile, Abbott “Tre” Bray, a local school board member, has proposed a pickleball club and beer garden along the Saluda River. While the project is progressing, it has faced opposition from residents who want to maintain the area’s natural landscape.

What’s Next for Woodcreek’s Pickleball Plans

The City of Columbia Planning Commission will review Woodcreek’s proposal at a meeting on Thursday at 4 p.m. at City Hall. If approved, the new courts would add another option for Midlands pickleball players as the sport continues to grow.
