Pickleball Popularity in South Mississippi: Locals Flock to the Courts!

Pickleball Popularity in South Mississippi: South Mississippi residents are embracing pickleball as the sport continues to gain popularity. Many locals are picking up pickleball paddles and joining the courts, including Robin Midcalf Brosig, who started playing to stay active but found a strong sense of community.

A Welcoming and Social Sport

Brosig enjoys the connections he has made through the game and values the inclusive nature of the pickleball community.

“So many wonderful people playing. I mean, you meet people anyway, but there’s just a different vibe with the pickleball community. I have people at different places that I have met that I enjoy playing with. I still look forward to public spaces especially indoors to play with them,” -(Robin Midcalf Brosig)

Pickleball for Everyone

Brosig plays primarily at Picklr, a popular local facility. Owner David Johnston believes the sport’s accessibility is the reason for its success along the Gulf Coast.

“So, you don’t have to be an athletic person. A lot of people come in and say they’re not very athletic but I want to play pickleball. Anyone can pick it up and learn how to play and have a competitive fun game early on in your first night playing. You can learn how to hit the ball with the rules and then learn how to have a fun game,”-(David Johnston)

Brosig has introduced the sport to many people, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“It’s addictive and I just can’t tell you one person that I have said try pickleball that didn’t love it,” -(Robin Midcalf Brosig)

More Facilities Coming to the Coast

In addition to Picklr, another facility will soon provide more opportunities for residents to play. Southern Swing Sports is finalizing a new venue in Gulfport, further expanding access to the sport.

Growing Impact on the Community

With more facilities opening, pickleball is set to become even more popular in South Mississippi. The sport continues to attract players of all ages and skill levels, strengthening social connections and encouraging an active lifestyle.
