Cal State LA Pickleball Courts: Cal State LA will soon introduce four pickleball courts in front of the Student Services Building. The courts, set to open later this semester, will provide students with a new recreational option. Free paddle rentals will be available, and the facility can be rented for $480 an hour.
Bringing Pickleball to Campus
The university recognized the sport’s rapid growth and saw an opportunity to add it to campus. “Growing popularity of pickleball across the country and saw an opportunity to bring this dynamic sport,” said Erik Hollins, Executive Director of Strategic Communications at Cal State LA. The school aims to create “engaging activity that enhances campus life and contributes to a vibrant community atmosphere.”
Part of a Larger Trend
Cal State LA is not the first in the California State University system to offer pickleball. Hollins noted that Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Northridge also have courts. The sport has become increasingly popular, with over 15,910 courts nationwide, according to USA Pickleball.
Understanding the Sport
Pickleball is a paddle sport similar to tennis and badminton. Players use paddles to hit a plastic ball over a net. The game is typically played in doubles, and serves must be underhand. A unique rule is the “kitchen,” a no-volley zone seven feet from the net.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The university plans to host promotional events to introduce the courts. “Catering to the surrounding LA community to promote our new campus feature.” said Hollins. The courts will also be available to staff and the local community, expanding access to the fast-growing sport.
