City Park Upgrades: Rogersville to Add Pickleball Courts with Grant Funding

Rogersville to Add Pickleball Courts: The Rogersville Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted on Feb. 11 to begin advertising for construction bids on new pickleball courts at Rogersville City Park. The courts will be built on the site of the former tennis courts, which were recently demolished by the city’s Street Department in preparation for the project.

Progress Toward Construction

Alderman Brock Gladson, who also serves on the Parks Board, said the next step is securing a general contractor. “We’re just looking to seek bids from a general contractor to handle the paving and getting the surface ready for putting new courts down,” Gladson said.

Vice Mayor Brian Hartness praised Public Works Director Mark Morley and his team for their work in clearing the area. Alderman Todd Biggs, also on the Parks Board, expressed enthusiasm for the project, calling pickleball “one of the most popular, growing sports.”

Grant Funding and Park Improvements

The project is part of a broader effort to improve Rogersville City Park. In 2023, the city received two state grants for park upgrades. A $630,000 Community Development Block Grant will fund sidewalks and paving, including the pickleball courts, with the city contributing a $70,000 match.

Additionally, a $500,000 Local Parks and Recreation Fund grant will be used to build two new restrooms, and a concession stand, and install new playground equipment. The city will match this grant with $500,000 in local funds.

What’s Next?

The city will review construction bids and select a contractor to complete the courts. Once finished, the new courts will provide residents with a dedicated space for one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.
