Downtown Tuscaloosa to Get New Pickleball Courts as Sport Gains Popularity

Downtown Tuscaloosa to Get New Pickleball Courts: Construction is underway on two new city-funded pickleball courts in downtown Tuscaloosa. The courts, located next to the YMCA on 13th Street, are expected to be completed by summer. The project, which includes fencing, lighting, and security cameras, will cost the city over $525,000.

Expanding Pickleball Access

Pickleball, a sport often described as a mix of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton, has been growing rapidly across the U.S. With about 70,000 courts nationwide, including 18,000 added last year, Tuscaloosa is keeping pace with this trend. These new courts will be ADA-accessible, making the game more inclusive for players of all ages and abilities.

In addition to the downtown courts, more pickleball facilities are planned across Tuscaloosa County. Projects include courts near River Run Park, University Beach, and Buddy Powell Pavilion, supported by the Tuscaloosa City Council.

City Leaders Support the Project

The downtown courts are being built by Amason & Associates, and city officials have expressed their enthusiasm for the project. District 4 City Councilman Lee Busby, who represents the area, highlighted the importance of providing accessible outdoor recreation.

“I am pleased that the City is expanding ADA-accessible recreational opportunities in District 4,

Enhancing access to outdoor spaces encourages community members to enjoy fresh air and physical activity, fostering a healthier community and improving our overall quality of life.”-(Lee Busby)

Growing Demand for Pickleball

Pickleball’s rise in popularity is evident in its widespread appeal. The sport provides a fun and engaging way to stay active without being overly strenuous, making it accessible to both younger players and those with physical limitations. With the city’s investment in new courts, more residents will have opportunities to participate in this growing sport.
