Pickleball Courts at Merriner Park: Streator city officials have chosen Merriner Park as the site for two new pickleball courts, provided grant funding is secured. The City Council selected the park over other proposed locations, citing parking availability, restroom access, and potential for expansion as key factors in the decision.
Council Chooses Merriner Park Over Other Locations
The Streator City Council reviewed three recommended sites for the new courts: Merriner Park, the former Lipton Tea building lot, and Oakland Park.
While the Park Board favored the Lipton lot for its downtown location and space for multiple courts, council members had concerns about its lack of parking and restroom facilities. Adding a parking lot at the Lipton site was estimated to cost about $75,000, making it a less favorable option.
Merriner Park, in contrast, has ample parking, access to restrooms at the Incubator, and good visibility for the courts. Council members also noted that if some fencing at the public works garage is moved, there could be room for future court expansion.
Cost and Grant Funding
The estimated cost for each pickleball court is approximately $35,000. To help cover expenses, the city is applying for a $25,000 grant from AARP. If funding is approved, construction will move forward at Merriner Park.
Additional Park Improvements Discussed
During discussions, Council Member David Reed pointed out that the playground at Merriner Park, which was installed in 1995, will need replacement in the near future. Reed also inquired about adding basketball courts to city parks.
City Engineer Jeremy Palm confirmed that the idea has been discussed and suggested it could be included in the city’s next Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Grant application.
Looking Ahead
The city’s decision to build pickleball courts at Merriner Park reflects its commitment to expanding recreational opportunities.
If the AARP grant is secured, residents can look forward to new courts in the near future. Meanwhile, discussions continue on further park improvements, including a potential new playground and basketball courts.
News in Brief: Pickleball Courts at Merriner Park
Streator plans to build two pickleball courts at Merriner Park if grant funding is secured. The city chose the location over two other options due to parking and restroom access. The courts will cost about $35,000 each, with a $25,000 grant application pending. Additional park upgrades are also being considered.
